Imagine the worst possible torture. Now imagine the same thing only ten times worse; It was exactly like that in Auschwitz. During the Holocaust, thousands of Jews were sent to this concentration camp which consisted of three camps combined into one. Here they had a camp; Auschwitz I; the main camp, Auschwitz II; Birkenau, and the last one is Auschwitz III; Monowitz. Each field was responsible for a different part but they all pursued the same thing; elimination of the Jewish race. In these camps they suffered cruel punishments, harsh housing, and Nazi guards who watched and killed them on a daily basis. While forced to live in Auschwitz they suffered many cruel and harsh punishments. The main form of punishment was the gas chambers. These chambers were cells made underground and could be sealed. Zyklon-B was the poison used to gas and kill the Jewish people. “It takes about 10 minutes to kill 2,000 to 3,000 people in the gas chamber.” (Saldinger p.57) After gassing they were then removed from the chamber and taken to the crematorium where the bodies were disposed of. Sometimes it wasn't even the guards who disposed of the bodies, more often than not it was the prisoners who were forced to remove their comrades from the rooms. This was just one of many forms of punishment; there were many others and some were just as bad. The second form of punishment was forced labor. Forced labor was almost exactly like slavery; slavery of the Jewish race. In all concentration camps there was a minimum working day of eleven hours, where they were forced to work for free at many different companies that produced weapons and other things for the war against their own people... half of paper... .. .. at all; you were constantly looking over your shoulder and worrying about what would happen next. Life in Auschwitz was definitely not what many people think it was. Life was hard, the housing was harsh, the guards were mean and brutal, and the different things that could happen to you were terrifying. One day he would kill most of the people in there and they lived like that for years. Every day was a constant battle for their lives and they never got any respite. So many people died from illness or from the things the guards did and no one could save them. The food was terrible and they had to hurt each other to get more food and not starve. They were forced to turn on each other to survive when they never should have. Life was never the same for those who went to Auschwitz and survived. As for those who didn't survive; they have never seen a better day.
