Topic > Symbolism of the Black Cat - 1155

In the story “The Black Cat” written in 1845 by Edgar Allan Poe, it is revealed that karma always returns to the future. It shows that anything done perversely, maliciously or harmfully will always bring consequences in life. The story illustrates a series of events within a man's family. The narrator indicates that as a child he was a sensitive animal lover. He was spoiled by his parents with a variety of pets. He married early and was happy with his wife. They had birds, goldfish, a beautiful dog, rabbits, a little monkey and a cat. The cat is black (symbol of witches and evil). What was once a happy life ended up turning into a nightmare when his drinking problem developed. The narrator is the protagonist of this short horror story. Unfortunately in life evil repays with evil because what goes around always comes back. The story opens with the narrator telling readers, “But tomorrow I die, and today I would like to lighten my soul.” This quote shows that he wants to free his soul from the guilt he carries within himself. This tale centers on a black cat named Pluto (Roman god of the dead) and the deterioration of a man. Pluto, the cat, is man's favorite pet and playmate. “I alone fed him and he assisted me wherever I went around the house. Even with difficulty I managed to stop him from following me through the streets. These are examples of the feeling of love he feels towards his feline friend. Their friendship lasted this way for several years. Conflict develops when man's personality begins to change; “I became, day by day, moodier, more irritable, and more careless about the feelings of others.” These changes occur when he begins to deeply drink a c......middle of paper......and remains still for a moment. Next, a dozen arms dismantle the wall and find the cat “with its mouth extended and the solitary eye of fire” sitting on the corpse's head. The narrator realizes that "he has walled the monster up in the tomb." In conclusion, this short story perfectly illustrates how karma works against a person after committing evil acts. The worse his actions were, the worse the torture was for him. Karma never fails in life. Sooner or later, an evil deed repays with extreme torture. The worst mistake a person makes is to think that his heinous act was accomplished successfully. Whatever is done in the darkness always comes to light. The narrator sold his soul to the devil as he became increasingly perverse. In the end, the black cat (the devil) takes over, exposing the one he once loved and making him pay a terrible price for his actions..
