Princess Diana was arguably the most famous celebrity in the world at the time of her death. Privately, Diana felt she was simply a normal person; however, it was much more. She was known to be a champion of the helpless and desperate. Diana's influence was felt around the world through her extensive humanitarian activities, which consisted of collaborating with and starting numerous charities. Diana used her royal title and celebrity to raise awareness of many forgotten or overlooked causes. As a result of her travels around the world, Diana became the people's princess and the public was intrigued by her devotion, consideration and kindness. Diana's wide and deep influence is evident in the popularity of the Elton John tribute song “Candle in the Wind.” In fact, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, it became the best-selling single of all time (RIAA). Elton John brought together the world's feelings of loss in his song "Candle in the Wind" and, although his purpose was generally ineffective, through the use of diction, imagery and emotional tone he was able to speak for of a world that has lost its princess. Elton John captivates his audience through the use of strong diction and thought-provoking words in "Candle in the Wind", particularly using words such as "rose" (line 1, 33, 37), "called out" (line 5) , “whispered” (line 6), and “torch” (line 19). These words engage the audience because people understand their meaning. The “Rose” (line 1, 33, 37) is often symbolized by love, beauty and royalty. The rose is the emblematic flower of England and has been synonymous, throughout history, with royalty. Roses are also linked to love and are given as a token of the love one might feel for another.
