W. Clement Stone once said, “Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it's right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity.” The same words apply to the three main characters in Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird. The three characters demonstrate courage by standing up, saying no, and becoming who they truly are. Watching Boo Radley kill Bob Ewell, Jem touch the Radley home, and Atticus' stand against the court, various types of courage are demonstrated throughout the lives of the characters in the novel. Boo Radley is making a really big stand when he first comes out. time in seven years and protected Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell. Boo Radley has been watching Jem for a long time and Scout kills Bob Ewell who wanted to take revenge on Atticus by killing his children. As they walk home from school, Bob Ewell attacks them. “We were almost to the road when I felt Jem's hand leave me…more shuffling and there was a dull crunching sound and Jem screamed…suddenly he was thrown backwards and thrown to the ground…the shuffling noise was dying out; someone gasped and the night was silent again” (262), Scout describing what happened that night. The night begins with Aunt Alexandria foreshadowing that something bad will happen to Jem and the scout. Scout also notices a strange look on his face; Scout knows her aunt is worried about something. As Jem and the scout return home they begin to hear noises; they think Cecil Jacobs is trying to scare them. Jem and Scout are close to their house so they assume they are in a safe place but it doesn't seem that way. As Bob Ewell takes Jem away and he screams, Boo Radly decides it's time for him to get up and get the... middle of paper......take” (218), Atticus explains to his son. Atticus wants his children to learn the lesson because it is against Bob Ewell and his daughter. This doesn't mean you have to hate them but also defend them. This shows that Atticus is a courageous person. Looking at Boo Radley killing Bob Ewell, Jem touching the Radley house, and Atticus' stance against the court, various types of courage are demonstrated throughout the lives of the characters in the novel. Killing a mockingbird is about courage and how the characters face the problems they face with courage. As W. Clement Stone once said “Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it's right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity. " Works Cited Lee, Harper. To Kill a Mockingbird. New York: WARNER BOOKS EDITION, 1960. Print.
