It is tied to the history of the United States. Since the early 1600s, people from other countries immigrated to North America to live a better life. Thus, US society has become increasingly diverse. Thus, there has been a tremendous amount of racial and ethnic assimilation among immigrant groups, with the exception of the non-white ethnic group (textbook 183 page 17). Especially among them, African Americans moved to the United States as slaves. They were exploited to work on plantations. Abuse of workforce is contrary to the fundamental ideal of the United States pursuing freedom and equality. Then civil war broke out due to ideological distinctions between the Southern and Northern states. Southern states insisted on slavery and Northern states advocated abolishing it. The result was Northern victory, and President Abraham Lincoln presented the Emancipation Proclamation. To counter discrimination, Martin Luther King Jr., a black Protestant minister, led civil rights movements such as marches and nonviolent demonstrations with thousands of people.
