For my portfolio project, I chose to create the soundtrack for Kuvastin – Reflector. I kept the goal of achieving an audio/visual harmony that integrated perfectly into the film. I chose this film over the others because I had never done any type of animation sound design and wanted to broaden my skill set. I first started by choosing a 5 minute section of the film to score and create the effects for. I inserted the video file into Final Cut Pro Because the film is dated, the analog-to-digital conversion process left the film encoded at a low resolution and low frame rate. Since the video is stop motion animation, the increased frame rate will not affect the video, but will improve compatibility. In Logic Pro 9 the lowest frame rate sync available is 25p and "Reflector" was encoded at 12.5p, so re-encoding the film at 25p makes a difference, but ensures correct synchronization with audio and video. Converting the video resolution to 1920x1080 also allows for better compatibility with modern monitors while maintaining the 4:3 aspect ratio. The video quality will not improve, however, the film has been upscaled well and is perfectly watchable at this resolution. This has helped me solve (and prevent) many problems with syncing and inserting sound effects and display in different applications. I studied the film intensively to get a feel for the aesthetic and generate ideas for the scope of sound effects and musical composition required. I found a copy of the original film and listened extensively to the original score and sound design to generate a compositional idea... half the paper... an SD card and, more importantly, the recordings I could at the end sounded much better to match the film on the iPhone 5S than the Zoom H4N. As my sound design progressed, I discovered that Logic Pro 9 had some great sound FX that I could use for some dark scenes and character movements that required audio. As I created most of my effects, I used samples and processed them to reimagine them for use in my sound design. For sounds like motors and impacts, loops provided a quick way to get the right sound without having to waste time trying to create them through recording. In conclusion, I'm happy I chose to make this film because it taught me a lot about the aspect of sound design and composition for animation. I received so much incredible feedback from my peers that I never thought I would receive, and overall, I'm proud of the finished product.
