Alcohol abuse is a major problem on American college campuses. Most college students might not think this is a huge problem, but it is. Alcohol abuse is one of the biggest problems facing colleges and universities across America. Speaking to the Senate Homeland and Governmental Affairs Committee, Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut said: “Alcohol abuse on college campuses has reached a point where it is much more destructive than most people realize and today it threatens too many of our young people." Alcohol abuse by college students impacts their fellow students, the campus, and surrounding communities. (College Drinking Problems and Research Solutions) Some consequences college students face for alcohol abuse include academic obstacles and unsafe sex. Nonetheless, universities and societies can still do something to reduce the problem of student binge eating. One of the main effects of alcohol abuse in college is a decline in academic performance. Every weekend, most college students nationwide forget about their studies and go out drinking. College students who routinely spend their free time partying and drinking will often see a drop in their grades. According to a study by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), “25% of college students… skip classes, perform poorly on exams or tests, and get lower grades overall” [due to alcohol abuse] (Wechsler et al.,). For example, if a student suffers from a hangover, they are more likely to skip class, resulting in failing grades. Furthermore, “there is evidence that chronic drinkers have difficulty maintaining focused attention and concentration” (Gradi and Alco……half of paper……t in helping a successful student quit without fear of having legal or academic problems. Finally, having a “safe driving” program would prevent the student from drinking and driving, especially at night.
