"Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening" is by far one of my favorite works of modern poetry. The thoughtful, unhurried atmosphere of the poem is reflected in calm, rich imagery that creates a vivid mental image. The poem's simple words and rhyme scheme give it an easy flow, which adds tranquility to the piece. Each aspect of the poem builds on the others to bring the mind back to the calm of a winter evening. The first stanza of the poem is quite simple and provides the basis for the imagery. He mentions the woods and implies that they are far from the city and civilization "his house however is in the village". It also shows the relaxed pace the speaker is adopting, having plenty of time to simply watch the snow fall. As I think about it, the words of the first verse are not overtly dark, however through their order and the way they were chosen they create a rather thoughtful atmosphere. The second verse provides more insight into the images sketched in the first; it also provides a more defined time and place. The first two lines of this stanza place the reader firmly rather deep in the woods and far from any habitation. In fact he is so off track that his horse is perplexed by his actions. The next line gives a better picture of the scene "Between the Woods and the Frozen Lake"; It seems to be a rather quiet and solitary place. The next line then predicts that it is night...
