Do mermaids really exist? This is a question that many have asked themselves over the years but never taken the time to try to find out. I personally believe that the existence of mermaids is absolutely possible, especially considering the fact that the world has only explored 5% of our oceans. Scientists discover new species of sea creatures every day, but many still try to argue that everything about mermaids is simply a myth. There are a lot of strange creatures that we have discovered in the oceans, so why do people think it's so ridiculous that the existence of mermaids could be possible? Another question that many tend to ask is; what is a mermaid? There are so many different ideas and opinions on what a mermaid actually looks like. The word mermaid itself is made up of two parts; the first is the word Mer, meaning sea, and handmaiden referring to a woman. There is also a male version of a mermaid called a merman. Basically, a mermaid is a half-human, half-fish creature. They have the torso of a fish and the upper body of a human. Technically there are still two legs but these have fused into a single tail covered in thick, scaled skin. Mermaids are said to reach a length of about five feet and a maximum weight of 125 pounds. Mermaids are generally considered to be very beautiful and extremely attractive in appearance, but this is just a presumption. The actual appearance of a mermaid is nothing like what many think, and may be considered repulsive to many (suddenlink.net). Mermaids have a very interesting but unusual life. The lifespan of a mermaid is on average thirty years. The reason for their short life is their rapid heartbeat, which is a journey... middle of paper... impossible, it has to do with the skin (DoubleXScience.org). The creature's human skin would be extremely damaged by various things. Like being continually submerged in salt water and constantly exposed to the sun. These are some of the significant justifications given as to why the existence of mermaids is absurd to many people. The existence of mermaids has been - and most likely always will be - a very controversial and inconclusive topic. After doing extensive research and investigating the matter in depth, I have a better understanding on both sides. Many of the speculations provide different reasons justifying the prospects of each position. I have concluded that the possibility that mermaids exist is not as ridiculous as the average uninformed person might assume. The problem is simply that people don't like what they can't understand.
