Just under 10% of rapes that occur in the United States are male victims. (Rape Crisis Center) The Rape Crisis Center website states, “2.8% are white males, 3.3% are African American males, and 4.4% are mixed race.” Unfortunately, the percentage of women victims of sexual violence is far greater than that of men. 17.7% of white women are raped for a long time, 18.8% of African American women, and 24.4% of mixed women. The 1970s is actually the time when the first rape crisis center was established to treat victims of sexual assault in San Francisco and Washington DC (K.Dean). This generation included the first anti-rape movement and the passage of hundreds of laws to defend rape and sexual abuse victims. (K.Dean) Although this movement aimed to improve conditions for victims of sexual violence, thousands of people continued to report rape.
