Vitamin E is the general classification of a group of eight fat-soluble tocopherol and tocotrienol compounds. Vitamin E works primarily as an antioxidant, but it also has other roles in the body [1]. Tocopherols and tocotrienols are two classes of chemical compounds that have vitamin E activity. Vitamin E is composed of four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. Each of the compounds appears in alpha-beta-gamma and delta- forms. Different forms of vitamin E have individual levels of biological activity and can be found in different increments in various foods and supplements [1]. Vitamin E in all its forms works predominantly as an antioxidant protecting cells from free radicals in the body. Vitamin E works as an antioxidant by donating a hydrogen atom from a hydroxyl group to a free radical within the body. Vitamin E also plays a role in the function of the immune system and protects cell membranes and the regulation of gene expression. Vitamin E has been studied to discover other medical uses, including the prevention or treatment of many health conditions [1]. Vitamin E can be found in foods and dietary supplements. Natural vitamin E from food sources is called d-alpha-tocopherol. The dietary supplement is dl-alpha-tocopherol. Vitamin E is found in wheat germ, some nuts, seeds, oils and leafy green vegetables. Vitamin E is also present in many fortified cereals. Wheat germ provides the highest concentration of vitamin E, while sunflower seeds take second place. One tablespoon of wheat germ oil provides 100% of an adult's RDA of vitamin E. One ounce of sunflower seeds meets 37 of an adult's RDA of vitamin E. Other food sources of vitamin E include sunflower, safflower, soybeans and the like. ..... half of the sheet ...... in four different groups. The first group was administered 400 IU/day of vitamin E alone, the second; 200ug/day of selenium alone, the third; both and the fourth group; a placebo. The men were monitored for an average of six years. 529 men in the placebo group developed prostate cancer compared to 620 men in the vitamin E group who developed the disease. 575 men in the selenium group developed prostate cancer and 555 men in the combination group. The risk of prostate cancer in the United States is currently 16%. The study results showed that the risk of prostate cancer increased by 1.6% in men who took vitamin E supplements [6]. Doctors and health professionals advise against people taking vitamin E supplements unless they have a specific condition that requires it. Most of the vitamin E that the average person needs can be obtained through diet.
