American citizens are growing tired of increasing government control over the economy, healthcare, and a shady recovery plan (Engstrom, 2). According to a national poll, “voters are starting to realize that regulations implemented by the government are starting to intrude more into people's personal lives” (Thompson and Tringali, 2). The survey also states that “majorities of conservatives (61%) and liberals (54%) both say they are negatively affected by regulations that tell American businesses which workers to hire” (Thompson and Tringali, 2). Most people believe that government intervention makes citizens feel less responsible and that someone else will look after them and take care of them (Thompson and Tringali, 2). Thompson and Tringali state that “There are some positive links to regulations, with solid majorities saying they are positively influenced by those that require certain safety levels for drinking water (72%) or require controls to ensure better safety in drinking water schools and the workplace (66%)" (Thompson and Tringali, 2). "Even after World War II, a number of countries abroad have adopted constitutions or amended these documents to include social and economic rights, and these so-called positive rights include guarantees on goods and services such as public education, health care and a clean environment,” according to Hershkoff (Hershkoff, 1). While there are some positive influences on regulations, the majority are negative and show how the government is gradually taking away the rights of American citizens through regulations and social programs. “The year 2010 will be a watershed in the history of regulation,” according to Diane Katz (Katz, 1).
