Topic > LGBT Discrimination Essay - 755

Discrimination is defined as harmful behaviors directed at individuals or groups of people based on a particular category into which they fall. Prejudice has to do with the irrational attitudes and opinions that one person or group of people have towards another. Discrimination and prejudice are and have always been two of the biggest problems in our global society. Religious and LGBT discrimination and prejudice are two particular forms I would like to focus on. Gay rights are a prevalent issue not only in the United States, but also in global society as a whole. Homosexuals are often discriminated against and subject to prejudice. In an article I read, Susanarn Raghavan discusses the recent anti-gay bill signed by Ugandan President Yoweri-Museveni. This article stood out for showing that gay rights and discrimination is not something that strictly occurs in the United States. It is often an issue that is sidelined and not recognized as a global issue. Before the anti-gay law was signed, Obama, as well as representatives of other nations, had warned Musevini of their disapproval of the law. He was advised to reconsider if he wished to continue to have their help. This was shocking, as Museveni did not seem phased, even though the United States is one of Uganda's biggest aids, bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars every year to help Ugandans. The bill calls into question Uganda's protection of the human rights of its people. Post-bill laws make it a crime to be gay or not report anyone who breaks this law. Homosexuality was illegal before the bill, but the new legislation imposes threats and harsher punishments if someone is found guilty. These punishments include imprisonment, assault by the police, torture… middle of paper… her because of certain things they believe to be true against this other group. These negative beliefs can directly lead to conflict between groups. There are many different reasons why discrimination and prejudice occur in society, so it is difficult to say exactly why it is such a recurring problem. In general, discrimination and prejudice occur because people view themselves as superior to others simply based on their differences and use them as an excuse to act unfairly. I hate that this spreads from generation to generation and that there is virtually no way to completely erase this controversy from society. In reference to my articles, I do not think that any legal discrimination should be allowed. The very name “legal discrimination” sounds so wrong. How can it be considered legal to judge others based on biological or preferential aspects of life?.
