Career Case Study: Peter Tkach was enrolling in courses during the last semester of his junior year at Willamette University. He had done well throughout his education, gained through personal experiences, but he soon realized that his four years of college would be over soon and that he needed to decide what he would do for the rest of his life, or at least after the degree. Peter decided to enroll in Dr. Houser's Professional Development Theories course in hopes of discovering a career path that fits his formal education. During the course he was exposed to trait factor theory, personality theory, developmental theory, and social learning theory. He received great career lessons from The Adventures of Johnny Bunko, which he later applied to seek an internship and career. Peter was able to use these theories and concepts in his life by completing homework and by the end of the lesson he was no longer lost looking for a career path, but had a career he wanted to pursue and got an internship for the following summer . Trait-Factor Theories of Career Development The first theory Peter learned was the Trait-Factor Theory, which "assumes a one-person-one-job relationship" (p. 4). Trait factor theory, suited to Parsons' understanding, “is applied between knowledge and understanding of self and knowledge of occupations and external resources.” Once the individual understands himself, a career option usually presents itself (page 4). In Peter's situation, he felt he had good self-understanding but would need help finding a job suited to his skills and interests, which he ultimately did at the end of the course along with an internship suited to his specialism. One aspect of...half of the paper...", according to the book read in class The Adventures of Johnny Bunko, then he will set all the goals without letting his goals prevent other opportunities from happening. His summer plan is to to do an internship to start his future career path. Peter edited his resume and sent it to possible internship opportunities. This proved fruitful because he was able to get a position on Anna Peterson's campaign staff. After completing his undergraduate studies, he hopes to have a good enough LSAT score to attend Willamette's Law School. Peter hopes to continue on to graduate school and earn his doctorate to pursue a career in business law . Houser, Peter Tkach has found direction in his life and next year he will no longer be a lost senior wandering in the wilderness of professional confusion..
