The Vietnam War was a major war that occurred from 1959 to 1975 partly as a result of the Geneva Accords between the ARVN, led by Ho Chi Minh, and the NVA. This war began when the United States wanted to prevent the spread of communism in Vietnam with the help of South Vietnam. In other words, the US government wanted to avoid a domino effect of communism that would spread to many neighboring countries. However, public opinion did not agree with the government and there were many protests in the United States. After the Vietnam War ended, both the United States and Vietnam were reeling from all the anarchy that occurred during the 16 years of war. Many foreign relations were cut in half, politics in both America and Vietnam were changed, the people of both countries were changed forever, and economies were crippled due to the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War was the cause of multiple casualties in both Americas. and Vietnam. For example, according to “The Costs of The Vietnam War,” as many as 58,000 American soldiers were killed, about 150,000 wounded, and about 1,600 missing. On the other hand, approximately 660,000 South Vietnamese and approximately 1,550,000 North Vietnamese people were killed. This shows the amount of massacres that have occurred from this single war. North Vietnam had so many casualties that it today represented about the same amount as 1.5% of Vietnam's population (as a whole). Therefore, showing that the Vietnam War devastated the population of Vietnam. Additionally, there were many other costs associated with the Vietnam War. Some of these costs arise from the cost of weapons, transportation, and supplies.
