Aerobic fitness measurementAccording to researchers Mačković, Pojskić and Užičanin (2012), basketball is a strenuous game and “players spend 75% of playing time with a heart rate above 85% of its maximum value. Therefore, to play successfully, basketball players must be physically well prepared” (p. 33). To measure the aerobic capacity of basketball players, the test to be performed for this evaluation will be the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER). The PACER test can determine a player's aerobic fitness level with the use of a 20-meter shuttle. Mačković, et al. (2012) used this test with a group of thirty-four basketball players between the ages of 15 and 28. Therefore, this shuttle test will be an appropriate measure of aerobic capacity of high school basketball players. Equipment The boys' flat surface The high school gym will be used to conduct the 20-meter shuttle test. Additionally, marker cones, measuring tape and colored tape, CD player, FITNESSGRAM 20-meter PACER test CD, and speakers will be needed to administer the test (Plowman and Meredith, 2014). Each player will also be given paper and pencil to record the number of spins completed. Procedures The 20-meter shuttle run will be performed in the boys' high school basketball gym, where the floor is flat and non-slippery. A measurement of 20 meters (21 yards, 32 inches) will be marked on the floor using light tape, and traffic cones will be placed at the beginning and end of the course (Plowman and Meredith, 2014). You will be provided with a CD and audio recording of the PACER test. Team players will also need a pencil and a score sheet to record their scores.
