Completing all of these self-assessments left me with a sense of who I am as a leader, team member, community member, citizen, and as a person in general. I had never looked at myself this way or completed a series of assessments like this. I was surprised by the accuracy of the self-assessments. It leads me to better understand truly who and how I am. For the most part I was happy with the ratings. I believe that overall my self-assessments constitute the personality of a good lawyer in the professional path I choose to undertake. However, there were some negatives in the ratings, such as my problems with listening. I agree with the assessment, but it lets me know there are areas I need to work on to be a more effective leader. Assessments lead me to my beliefs, my personal vision and my understanding of leadership. I believe that leaders are not all the same. Just as people are not tailored to themselves, neither are leaders and we cannot expect them to be, and all leaders should not be dictated to have the same attributes. Some leaders may present different personalities and as such possess different ways of leading. Just like in self-evaluations, some leaders may have different styles. However, in my opinion, there is a basic set of skills, elements, ideas and capabilities that leaders should possess. This includes the ability to work as part of the team. A leader must be able to know that he is part of the team and not develop a sense of superiority. I have been part of many groups and organizations where the leaders maintained a level of superiority over the group members. As such, leaders must be able to manage themselves. Leadership is an important element in our society and for our society to thrive we must have leaders who promote social change at all levels. “Leaders transform followers, helping them to become leaders themselves” (Komives, 2009). There has been a shift from the traditional role of leaders to one that makes everyone a leader and an agent of social change. Completing self-assessments allows leaders to understand their strengths and weaknesses, as it did for me. Learning the 7 Cs and forming a personal vision and understanding of leadership provides leaders with the knowledge and understanding needed to become effective leaders of positive change. Finally, all leaders need to review what they can do to improve their personal leadership development. The future depends on today's leaders.
