There are two tests that doctors can use to detect gonorrhea: a urine test or a swab of the affected area. Urinalysis can identify a disease, even when no signs or symptoms appear. A swab test of the affected area is available, sometimes multiple tests are performed to detect which STD is present, home tests are available. Once a home test is performed, it is sent to a laboratory to be analyzed and identify what is present. Gonorrhea is treated with several types of antibiotics, including ceftriaxone, azithromycin, and doxycycline. The treatment is used for people who have tested positive for gonorrhea or for someone who has had intercourse with someone who has been diagnosed. When newborns are treated for gonorrhea, medications are given into the eyes.
