Common Sense written by Thomas Paine in 1776 was originally a pamphlet advocating America's independence on reflections on government and religion. It also talks about the situation of colonial peoples. Paine wanted a new beginning where everyone had equal social rights and freedoms. Paine begins by expressing the difference between society and government. Paine says, “Society in every state is a blessing, but government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst, intolerable state…” (Paine 65). By this he is saying how built it is and it is a task that people come together to achieve while the government is only there to protect us from our evil and twisted behavior. Paine's belief is that government's sole purpose for existing is to judge based on property, liberty, and to protect people's lives.
