Science has taken another step forward towards the future of humanity by giving parents the opportunity to give their children the best possible start. We are now given the opportunity to decide what personality and characteristics we want our children to have before they are even born. Although at first glance it may seem surprising and feel like you are choosing exactly the chocolate bar you want in a convenient store. However, are we ready for humanity to play with what some might call “God”? Is it morally right to interfere with the genetic code of our children? Or is it wrong? These are the questions that are being raised regarding the issue of genetically engineering our children. Danielle Simmons mentioned in Nature Education in 2008 that “Genes influence health and disease, as well as human traits and behavior.” Well, genetic engineering on human genes has been going on for a long time now. It has also been performed on babies of women who had difficulty conceiving to prevent birth defects and help produce a healthy baby. As time has passed, scientists have become more precise and accurate in genetically engineering human genes (Simmons). Scientists are now able to help parents make their baby exactly as they like. Now that we can engineer the genetic code of humans to this point, we can produce a healthier generation that will have our ideal traits and behaviors. Genetically modified babies will have no say in what is done to their bodies before birth, and as a result will have to live with whatever happens as a result of the genetic tampering. I believe that interfering with children's genetic code to make them have traits and behaviors the way their parents prefer is morally wrong, and that children's genes are created a certain way for a reason. It will be like... half the paper... a healthier generation. There are too many unanswered questions and many unknown facts about the human genome and how it works. We should not pursue this type of science, but in fact work to improve our environment to help influence the development of a healthier generation. Nature will evolve at its own pace, so let's not take on the role of being “god” and risk ending up with a genetic problem. Eventually, and hopefully, the 30 designer children who have already been born will grow up and help the scientists in their studies. Genetic engineering of unborn children is morally wrong and we should in no way alternate a human being, especially if they cannot communicate. Why waste funds on the alternation of nature, when we can use them for other sciences that can benefit us in other ways? Let's prevent what could end in a major disaster and accept Darwinism.
