Igor Stravinsky constitutes a first-class example of the differences and similarities between neoclassicism and modernism. Modernism is defined as “A term used in music to denote a multifaceted but distinct and continuous tradition within 20th century composition”1, while neoclassicism can be defined as “A movement of style in the works of some 20th century composers century, which, especially in the period between the two world wars, revived the balanced forms and clearly perceptible thematic processes of previous styles to replace what were, for them, the increasingly exaggerated gestures and formlessness of late Romanticism”2 Not only by comparing his works to others, but within his own work, can the two movements be better distinguished. Stravinsky composed in both styles throughout his musical career, making his works not only a fine example but a map for the transition between periods/movements, thus giving distinction to the movements. Stravinsky “cultivated a flexible and reciprocal association with his evolving environment. While constantly producing works that transformed the sensibilities of those who heard them, he himself continually allowed his own sensibilities to be nourished, even transformed, by the music and music-making of others.”3 Comparing and contrasting Stravinsky's works with those not only his works, but with those of his contemporaries of the early 20th century, the division and similarities between neoclassicism and modernism can be fully observed. Examining a piece like The Rite of Spring, one can observe modernist techniques and styles, Stravinsky created “an extra rhythmic layer, a bit like the accents superimposed on the regular patterns of The Rite.” 4 Stravinsky transcended the limits of rhythm... in the middle of the paper... of varieties, yet defined the differences between the styles.
