This reflective essay will focus on one of the learning needs I developed during my two-week probationary internship at the hospital. Reflection helps an individual develop their skills and leaves room for self-criticism as they can contemplate actions and make relevant changes (Taylor, 2000). I will apply Driscoll's (2000) “What”, “So what” and “Now what” model of reflection in this work because it is a more coherent and understandable approach to follow when writing a reflective report and is also a simpler guide to write reflections. The learning need that I have chosen to reflect on in my learning plan is to have a better understanding of diabetes and the 6 basic medications used in the treatment of this condition as it is a common disease in the department where I have been assigned for my first internship. The target time to achieve this was by the end of my two-week internship, which was January 27 to February 9, and I achieved this with the help of a number of factors. In this assignment, all patient and ward names have been omitted and indicated by letters and numbers for confidentiality reasons, as set out in the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Practice (2008). The article will mainly be about type 2 diabetes and also about my learning needs. The purpose of the 2 week internship was to help us familiarize and expose ourselves to the departments before starting our actual 8 week internship. During my 2 weeks induction to practice, I worked in a hospital in a medical ward preferably known as ward 1 and most of the patients were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes. Non-insulin dependent diabetes develops when there is… half an article on diabetes and its management, I will continue to research this condition and also spend time with the diabetes nurse specialists on the ward to find answers to the questions I struggle with regarding the disease. This is to avoid the difficulties I faced when I started working in ward 1. I will have to face the same situation as I will be going to different hospitals for placement before the end of my 3 year course. So, to avoid the unsatisfactory experience that I gained during my first experience, I will inquire about the department where I have been assigned and do my research on the various conditions of patients in the department by exploring health-related websites and books. Additionally, I will ensure I provide quality practice to my patients, as set out in the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) quality standards, 2013).
