The health of a person and that of a community is strongly influenced by the social determinants of health. These determinants create a solid foundation for the healthy and correct development of a community (Public Health Agency of Canada, 2013). Additionally, a proper foundation will allow children within the community to develop appropriately, which will foster their intellectual and physical intelligence potential. This article will explore the effects of healthy childhood development, personal health practices and coping skills, health services, income, and social statuses in the Maple Leaf neighborhood. Additionally, this article will explore how the aforementioned social determinants of health directly affect students at St. Fidelis School. Finally, this article will explain how increased tooth decay in these children is a problem and how it can be addressed to overcome this problem. Within this community the most significant social determinant of health is healthy childhood development. Healthy childhood development is critical to this community as 16% of the neighbourhood's population is believed to be children aged 0 to 14 (City of Toronto, 2011a). Healthy childhood development is influenced by other social determinants of health such as housing, proper nutrition, and adequate income for caregivers. Furthermore, regulated child care and education have a strong impact on child development (Bryant, Raphael, Schrecker, & Labonte, 2011). These conditions not only have an immediate impact on child health and development, but the above determinants form the foundation for the child's future health as an adult (Raphael, 2012).
