In recent years something has put a strain on the lives of many people, we use it, we love it, we talk about it and we check it almost every hour of every day: this thing is called social networks. Only a few years have passed since MySpace was discovered in 2003, in 2004 Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook, followed immediately after, in 2006, by Twitter. These sites have become more than just an online destination, but a way of life. Notifications, follower counts, friend requests, comments on photos – all what might seem like silly things that teens and adults wait for the moment they get home to check. We unconsciously scroll through feeds and images of people we barely know, with curious human nature. Everyone at school is talking: “You won't believe what I just saw on Facebook!” or when a major political event occurs, most people admit “Oh yeah, I saw it on Twitter.” It is inevitable that social networking sites have had a major impact on our lives. The question is whether it is for better or worse. While many can make a compelling argument that social networking sites have connected them with friends and family, these sites have led to lower grades, decreased self-esteem/depression, and job losses due to dependence on the vacuum. Therefore, social networking sites are harmful to our society. Social networking sites lead to lower grades. As high school students we are presented with numerous distractions: talking, texting, eating and watching television, but none compare to the immense impact of social networks. Our brains are almost wired to be able to sit for hours simultaneously scrolling through feeds without getting bored.
