Topic > Supporting children with autism and their families

The first resource I would like to talk about would be the Aspergers Society of Ontario. The ASO is a non-profit organization created in 2000 by parents of children with Asperger's spectrum disorder and interested professionals. The ASO is the only agency in Ontario dedicated to serving people with Asperger's syndrome, their families and other affected individuals. The ASO provides educational information and support to the individual with mental disorder, their families, educators and mental health professionals, and the community to enable the individual to realize his or her full potential. If a Child Youth Worker has never worked with an individual with Asperger's This will then allow Aspergers to broaden their experience of mental disorders, learn about the specific type of autism and better understand the individual. If the individual desires extracurricular support, the ASO would be beneficial to the CYW in providing such support. The ASO can be contacted by email or telephone and will respond within 24 hours so that the individual and the Children's Youth Worker can receive support and information immediately. The ASO provides a service that can be useful for Children's Youth Worker support systems. The Asperger's information line is provided via email or telephone and provides guidance on resources and services across the province. This will be beneficial to a CYW because it will allow them to receive information about the mental disorder and have any questions they may have answered. The second resource I would like to discuss would be the Toronto Partnership of Autism Services (TPAS). TPAS is a community-based service that helps children with autism and their families through intensive courses... middle of paper... and to communicate at events held for people they can relate to. Being able to have events provided to the community and be surrounded by people they can relate to allows them to feel accepted and appreciated. Autism Ontario for Toronto is beneficial to child youth workers and will allow them to expand their experience with mental disorders by being able to monitor the individual during events as they take place to see how they interact with others and have the opportunity to discover the child's weaknesses and progress. It will also allow them to provide support to the child in case any incidents occur such as the child feeling overwhelmed or uncomfortable. Participation in events will enable the Youth Worker to put together activities that will interest the individual and which may also improve the child's weaknesses.
