Before evaluating whether Gothic literature is losing its popularity or not, the answers collected from the questionnaire are that some people have decided that Gothic literature is not losing its popularity because they believe it might be at its peak or becoming even bigger than before in the 18th/19th century. However, a fair percentage of people believe that Gothic literature is losing popularity perhaps because people feel that it is not as popular as other genres that they find to be enjoyable reading. Is Gothic literature losing popularity or is it still popular in the 21st century? century? The popular moments of Gothic literature throughout history occurred from the 13th century through the 19th century, being the most popular due to its subgenres such as the supernatural, spirituality, and horror. Originally, the Gothic genre is a blend of sublime and romantic, where most of the classic novels like Wuthering Heights or The Picture of Dorian Gray etc. they have become household names. However, popular texts such as Jane Eyre, Frankenstein and The Castle of Otranto etc. They are taught religiously in schools, both GCSE and Alevel, which for some students aspire to the complex and fascinating Gothic genre, or for others the Gothic genre is always a fascination for avid fans. However, these popular books attract more people than others because one of the popular books was made into a popular movie and this may engage them more than the books. Beyond that, it is arguable that Gothic literature is still popular in society because many people are enthusiastic about the horror subgenre (which the Gothic genre created). While there is a clear distinction between the two, there is a strong... middle of paper... different genres that branch off from the horror genre – it's not as popular as it once was or as it should be. For example: Fig 1.6 This source suggests that in 2011 the genre of books some people read was the fantasy genre as it scored the highest with a possible 43-44% of people interested in that genre. In addition to this, it is also interesting to see how other genres are present that are typical elements of the Gothic genre. However, what is interesting is that both horror and science fiction are less than 10%, which shows that some people are not that interested in horror or science fiction genres. Although these are interconnected genres, there will always be different people who like different things, but judging from this source, horror/science fiction are not that popular before the science fiction genre was created and the horror genre was at its peak. it is the most popular.
