Alternative medical systems have a strong relationship with practice and comprehensive theoretical systems that have gone through evolution independently and also resemble the orthodox biomedical approach. There are some alternative traditional medical systems followed by some individual cultures in different parts of the world. Asian medicines are the best example in this regard. Therefore, all issues related to alternative healing systems will be discussed in detail. Defining Health/Illness There are a few types of healing systems related to health/illness. The type of healing system that will be discussed in this chapter includes traditional oriental medicine and Ayurveda. Traditional Eastern medicine seeks to emphasize the balance and imbalance of qi (pronounced chi), vital energy in terms of health and disease. Traditional oriental medicine includes techniques and various other types of methods which include acupuncture, herbal medicine and oriental massage. This was usually done by piercing the skin with the help of a needle. • Ayurveda is considered to be the traditional system of medicine of India. The concept of Ayurvedic medicine refers to the "science of life", known as a comprehensive system of medicine that seeks to put the body, mind and spirit on the same level.
