INTRODUCTION: A curtain of gas quickly dispersed over Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, without warning, causing hemorrhages, muscle convulsions and blindness, leaving victims to defecate and urinate in their clothes – death wish. In the early dark hours of December 3, 1984, children, elderly, men and women of all ages were dying due to poisoning from poisonous methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas that was treacherously leaking from the pesticide plant of Union Carbide India Limited. The leak of MIC gas and other toxic chemicals resulted in the immediate deaths of approximately 3,828 people. At the end of its wanderings, the gas leak caused the death of around 15,000 people due to the terrible state of the valves and lines of the plant; namely the failure of tank 610 which contained 42 tons of MIC, much more than allowed by safety regulations. This systemic failure caused India to take prompt action by arresting those they felt should be held accountable. They also provided medical care to the victims, launched an investigation and took the case to the Supreme Court where a settlement was reached. Furthermore, there have been many efforts to clean up the area and dispose of the contaminants plaguing Bhopal and to warn the public of potential dangers in the surrounding areas and water supply. The United States and India were not the only countries to take action; Canada also responded to Bhopal by creating the Major Industrial Accident Council of Canada (MIACC) in 1987. The world is still affected by the cataclysm today and rigorous time and effort have been devoted to researching the causes and potential solutions to these heinous incidents. malfunctions.
