Topic > Socioeconomic Effects of Migration from Rural to Urban Areas

Problem Statement As countries pursue development and industrialization, the need to build urban areas becomes certain. The lack of urban cities will make people living in rural areas want to move to urban areas. Every person wants a better standard of living than the one they find themselves in now. The push to migrate towards urban areas therefore becomes evident. Migration from rural to urban areas leads to a loss of labor in rural areas to work on agricultural land. It will lead to the decline of agriculture. It also leads to congestion in urban areas, so the level of unemployment will increase because people will fight for limited jobs. The poor housing situation will also increase because people from rural areas choose to stay in an area close to their work or livelihood because they can save a lot of money instead of using it for transportation. Informal settlers can cause disputes with the government regarding their location. The level of crime will also increase because people who are desperate to earn money or want an easy way to earn money without hard work choose the path of evil which can be destructive to people's lives and can affect the development of an area. Urban migration will increase the workforce in urban areas, but the people who would win in this situation are the people who own businesses and industries because labor would be cheap. Lack of job opportunities pushes people from rural areas to migrate to urban areas and can cause a problem similar to "brain drain" in rural areas. Migration from rural to urban areas also has a positive effect, as it sends money from work in urban areas to family in rural areas, would increase family income and could improve quality of life. Objectives The objective...... half of the paper. .....from rural areas to urban migration is the decrease in crime rate because there would be less population and the job of security forces like police or barangay captain would be easy. With less population there would be less need for land, shelter or houses, so there will be more trees in the area and industries such as logging can operate. The negative impact on rural areas of rural to urban migration is that there will be no progress or development. As the workforce and young employees migrate to urban areas there will be a decline in the birth rate and a reduction in food production. If migrants cut ties to rural areas and did not support small businesses, businesses in rural areas would be forced to close. Rural areas would turn into ghost towns and only dependent elderly people would remain there.
