Our ever-increasing dependence on social media impacts our opinions and what the media portrays about the world of drugs. Social media is seen as a way for people to communicate with friends, abroad or update what is happening in their lives. Social media makes social interaction faster, more convenient, and easier, with just a click of a button or a tap on a screen. With such drastic growth in the world of social media, companies have found it easier to advertise to their consumers by using ads on social media websites to promote their products. Likewise, the drug world has not been left behind, as, similar to corporations, they too have used social media to exploit drug use and trafficking (Cawley). While this is a negative effect on drugs in social media, it has also helped catch drug lords. Social media has had an impact on the global drug issue and has made the world of drugs “popular”. I believe that although social media has a great influence in our daily lives, it has a negative impact on the world of drugs. For example, I don't think there is much information available on drug issues at the local or national level because of the possibility of disclosing information that drug lords don't want to disseminate. Additionally, there are too many issues on the drug-related topic that social media would not be beneficial to use as exposure. If a country were to report the drug problem it is experiencing, the daily lives of the average citizen within the country would be affected, as would trade relations between neighboring or overseas countries. In Mexico, social media has helped locate, capture, expose information and control drug lords.
