Nowadays, browsing the Internet could be seen as a part of our daily life, as the Internet has provided a virtual reality with enormous freedom. In reality, possessing the characteristics of speed, immediacy, freedom and absence of borders, the Internet was a free domain in which each user could act as he wanted. In this cyberspace, some suggest that Internet censorship policy is necessary to prevent users from abusing the Internet. However, some people argue that Internet censorship should not be adopted, as freedom of speech is a fundamental human right. Regarding this controversial issue, in the following paragraph I will discuss both the advantages and disadvantages of Internet censorship. Internet censorship plays an indispensable role in preventing misuse of the Internet by users. Recently, some types of crimes have been committed via the Internet, including bullying and intimidation; some victims with an everlasting scar were teenagers. According to Kokswijk (2007, p. 119), the emphasis has been on the fact that “the Internet can, should and will be subject to social order”, and the question is how to establish such regulations. For example, some countries such as Russia and India have used selective Internet censorship to regulate users' speech on the Internet; one reason is to maintain social and moral norms. Internet censorship could actually prevent someone from bullying or intimidating another. Internet censorship is sometimes necessary to protect society, because it could maintain the stability of society and a country. The spread of rumors could cause social upheaval, and the disclosure of military secrets could collapse the national defense system; neither is acceptable in a harmonious society and the above messages should be censored to maintain a stable circumstance. Research by Benjamin, Mahmoud, and Tobias (2012) argues that rumors could be spread quickly and easily in social networks, as a rumor started in a random node on Twitter reaches 45 million of the total 51 million members within just a few rounds of communication. Such a quick way of spreading rumors could easily create havoc in society; Censorship is therefore the most effective approach to prohibit bad actors from publishing messages. Censorship of Internet content is the best method to protect children; Could keep unwanted materials away from children. In this age of Internet prevalence, various information and materials can be easily shared and downloaded, including child pornography and pornographic advertising. Some advocates of Internet censorship argue that without it, children would be susceptible to pornographic resources.
