Counselor has respectable knowledge of Hispanic culture. For example, the counselor understands clients' need to feel macho and superior. In client culture, men are expected to be the breadwinners and express machoism (Laureate Education, 2012h). The APA guidelines recognize the importance of providing counseling to culturally diverse individuals. It is the counselor's responsibility to be sensitive and responsive when counseling individuals from different cultures. APA guidelines require counselors to educate themselves about cultures and gain knowledge that benefits the client (APA, n.d.). I gained insights through my colleague's discussion of the difficulty of shifting the client role. It is important to recognize when these cultural difficulties arise in the counseling process.
