In the novel “Catch 22” by Joseph Heller, he shows many kinds of flaws. The novel shows the reader the gender expectations from when the country is at war and when there is peace. The author, Joseph Heller, presents critical feminism in the disadvantages and expectations of men and women, where men are forced to engage in war while women are looked down upon in society. Both parties are battered by the abuse of power but have no way out. There are specific expectations and guidelines for the behavior of men, especially during the time of war, who are forced to act boldly and proudly. These strong individuals must protect their country, fight bravely and persist if they meet the requirements. The soldier must reach a certain age and a certain medical standard to be able to serve in war. The typical stereotype of men is that they fight bravely and then talk. Men would use violence to sell their problems, instead of an internal expression to express their ideas. Men must serve their country in war while women serve at home. The women expressed in the novel “are grotesque, as useless as your depressed men” (Heller, Pg 27). During the catastrophe men are imagined as courageous figures who will resist all obstacles and there will be no reason to give up. The men looked clumsy or they wouldn't have been able to fight. During war, situations become chaotic, soldiers are afraid of not having to show fear. some of the men in the novel displayed insanity where they "threatened to throw [a girl] out the window". They were completely demoralized men of distinction” (Heller, Pg 352). The ego does not realize the outcome of its idiotic actions, but seeks sex and desires more important things. In the mentality of war, there is no... middle of paper... going home or being sent home due to your own folly. The only way to escape the thought is to “calm my fears of sexual impotence” (Heller, Pg 298) towards those who are weak and have no self-esteem of power. the way is to degrade and threaten those who are weak. Towards the end “Everything about Nately was binding just outside the door. The knife came down, missing him by a few inches” (Heller, Pg 453). She became strong enough to almost commit to killing another man. Thinking about the entire novel, the author described the stereotypes of women and the mental and physical harm that came with inferiority. Meanwhile, men desired to be bullies, both on the battlefield and in the community. The gender differences were right. both genders should be equal and have equal advantages to become the strongest version of themselves. Works Cited Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
