Edgar Allan Poe's story “The Fall of the House of Usher” and Alfred Hitchcock's film Vertigo are very similar in a couple of ways. One way is that they both have friends who help them in a murder. Secondly, both stories contain death, mystery and deception. In the film Vertigo John "Scottie" Ferguson receives a phone call from Gavin Elster, who is an old friend, to help him with a job. In the story "The Fall of House Usher" Rodrick Usher asks his old friend to help him with a job too. In Vertigo Elster wants Scottie to follow his wife as if she were “possessed” by someone or something. In "The Fall of the House of Usher" Rodrick Usher calls his nameless friend to help him carry his sister's "dead" body into the cellar of her coffin. Both have death involved. Vertigo sees Elster's wife Madeline "fall" from the tower and "The Fall of the House of Usher" sees Rodrick's sister Madeline die of illness. In the stories both Madeline Usher and Madeline Elster both died but in very mysterious ways. In Vertigo Madeline Elster is killed by her husband Gavin. In my operation...
