Topic > Modern slaves: the causes of modern slavery

Modern slavery2,880. There are many children who are taken away from their families every day. There are 2,880 eighty children who should play outdoors and enjoy their childhood. Instead they are torn from everything they know and forced into slavery, sometimes never to come out into the open. Slavery was not completely abolished in 1865. Over 27 million men, women and children are enslaved right now (“The Cost of Coercion”). That number is close to the population of Florida and Georgia combined who would be enslaved today. What most people today call “modern slavery” is the illegal trade in human beings for forced labor and exploitation; referring to the use of others for sexual exploitation, organ trafficking and forced labor. This international crime is happening all around us and governments are doing little or nothing. “About two hundred thousand slaves work here in America” (Madox). So the land of the free, well, it might not be so free after all. Second to drug trafficking, “human trafficking generates approximately $35 billion annually” (“The Covering House”). 35 billion is more than Google earns in a year. To better understand human trafficking, it is imperative to look at history. So, take advantage of the underlying issues of this crime that are happening today, in this moment. Finally, find solutions to this global epidemic to help the hopeless. It was only in the early 19th century that concerns about “white slavery” exploded in America after it became a political issue, namely the fear of “women and girls being kidnapped or tricked into going abroad and once forced into prostitution there” (Koh). Because women and girls were kidnapped and transported abroad, amidst paper and education to help them get back on their feet. Since many of them suffer from some kind of addiction to harmful drugs, the government should provide medical care and rehabilitation to these women. Not only should they provide the medical aspect of recovery, but the government should provide living spaces for the girls until they get back on their feet. As for the legal part of this issue; US officials should toughen punishment for convicted sex traffickers. All of these solutions are just that, solutions that governments need to implement prevention tactics like an inspection agency. Their task would be to search the factories, free the women and arrest the criminals. And above all, raise awareness. By making citizens aware of what is happening in and around their city, they will be more likely to help out in any way they can..
