Ray Bradbury chose the poem “Dover Beach” by Matthew Arnold, because by the time Guy Montag reads it, he is questioning his faith in a similar way to Matthew Arnold. Furthermore, the poem "Dover Beach" expresses Guy Montag's sadness and unhappiness towards the world. Ultimately, this poem represents the loss of love and desperation that Montag feels. For starters, at the beginning of Fahrenheit 451 Montag is unaware of the unfairness of his job. Soon after he becomes aware of the beauty of literature and begins to question his faith in life and the world around him, much like Matthew Arnold questions his faith in religion when he discovers that Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution. The theory of evolution shook Matthew Arnold's faith because it was telling him that his beliefs were not true because humans evolved from "apes."
