Adoption by same-sex couples has been a frequent issue of debate among foreign countries over the past decade. As of late 2013, same-sex marriage was officially legalized in sixteen countries including thirty-one cities around the world and is now pending in 13 other places (Marriage Equality around the World). A major concern is whether children raised in same-sex families are socially disadvantaged or psychologically impaired due to the unnatural environment. This essay will first address some opinions in support of same-sex adoption, and then provide respective opposing arguments to demonstrate the injustice of gay couples adopting. Skeptics argue that existing scientific evidence shows that homosexuality is somehow innate due to the procession of the "gay gene" into certain popularity. therefore it should be considered natural since people cannot change their sexual orientation by birth (Chicago researchers search "Gay Gene"). On this basis, same-sex couples should be afforded the same right as opposite-sex couples to enjoy a full family life by having children of their own. However, it is hardly possible to determine whether a person's homosexuality is innate. There is no official evidence or medical authority confirming that homosexuality is hereditary. Taking a look at the psychiatric perspective, lesbian or gay adoptive parents could actually promote homosexuality in children regardless of genetic factors (Encarna, 7). According to Freud's psychoanalytic theory, children aged three to six are in the "phallic stage", in which they develop their sexual orientation and gender role through identification with parents of the opposite sex. Failure in the identification process will lead to fixation in the phallic stage could result in...... middle of paper ......certainly in a better situation if brought up in a normal family with a male father and a female mother in so that their physical needs and curiosity during puberty can be more easily addressed with the help of a same-sex parent who has first-hand experience of their circumstances. Last but not least, children are worse off and under more pressure when raised in same-sex families due to increased chances of bullying and isolation from peers due to deviant family background. Young people can only enjoy a satisfying life and social experience if they grow up in a traditional and normal family, made up of a mother and a father. Despite all the above-mentioned drawbacks of same-sex parenting, it is more ideal and attractive for children to grow up in a heterosexual family and therefore adoption by same-sex couples should not be legalized for the sake of children's rights and well-being..
