The Woman Warrior Argumentative Essay Maxine Hong Kingston's novel The Woman Warrior is a series of narratives, vividly reminiscent of the stories she has heard throughout her life. These stories clearly describe the oppression of women in Chinese society. Although women in Chinese society might traditionally be viewed as subservient to men, Kingston saw them in a different light. For her, women are equivalent to men, strong and courageous. In some crude stories, depressing in their own unique way, they attempt to refute the traditional Chinese saying "it is better to have geese than girls." in Kingston by his mother deals with the suicide of one of his aunts, who remains anonymous throughout the story. After becoming pregnant by a man other than her husband, Kingston's aunt is forced to conceive her illegitimate child in a pigsty, while villagers raid and destroy her home. The next morning the disgraced woman dives into a well while holding her newborn baby, resulting in the death of both. Kingston's mother told her this story as a warning; to avoid being a shameful and disloyal woman like her aunt. Kingston, however, does not see his aunt as a promiscuous woman, but rather a victim or martyr. “Imagining her free with sex is not good,” he said.
