View of Human Nature Matthews believes that all people need to feel connected, accepted, and loved. This theory is in line with currently existing studies on attachment in children, which state that to develop a healthy attachment a child must have a consistent and responsive parental figure or primary caregiver. This theory also focuses on the person's perceptions of their experiences. Similar to Adlerian theory, this theory believes that people form patterns of behavior based on how they interpret their previous life experiences. For example, if a person grew up in a home where they witnessed domestic abuse, they may choose to continue this pattern in their procreative family. Matthews' theory agrees with family systems theory in many respects. Both share the idea that all behavior has a purpose, even if the purpose may not always be easy to discern. These theories also share the belief that vertical and horizontal stressors have a great impact on the family and its behavioral choices. This simply means that once we discover the client's vertical stressors and the horizontal stressors that break them down, we can begin to discuss their cognitions. Matthews' theory also states that people behave according to the principle of redundancy and because of the circular causality of family systems theory. She believes this because of her experiences with customers. He has seen a customer behave aggressively with staff in new situations and attributes this to the principle of redundancy. He also saw staff respond to this assault by restraining the customer. He attributes this response, and the subsequent impact of customers behaving aggressively towards staff, to circular causality.
