The Disney film, Mulan, is a fantastic film that depicts stereotypical gender roles, socialization of gender roles, and the consequences of overcoming one's gender role. Both males and females have a specific role in Chinese society that must be followed. Mulan made a courageous choice by posing as a man and going to war against the Huns in her father's place, risking grave consequences if she were captured. She broke the socialization of gender roles and could have faced very serious consequences for her actions. Mulan's Chinese society exemplifies the typical gender roles of males and females, the consequences of performing the opposite gender role, and shows what society expects from males and females in terms of characteristics and attitudes. Mulan is a young Chinese girl, who is trying to honor her family and ancestors by finding a husband. She was expected to be delicate, quiet, obedient, graceful, well-mannered and balanced, none of which Mulan displayed. She showed up late to meet the woman, "The Match Maker," who chose who Mulan would one day marry. Although women in China are expected to have a small waist, a waist that was too small, like Mulan had, was not good. She wouldn't be good at bringing children into the world. Even Mulan couldn't pour tea directly for the woman. She missed the cup, spilling the tea on the table. She was not very graceful and upset by "The Match Maker", who believed that Mulan would never honor her family. Mulan did not display the characteristics that Chinese society expected of a woman and was considered dishonorable by outsiders. When the emperor sent a request to send men to China to war, Mulan was frightened. Her father was one of many men called to fight.......half of paper...had, and as much as her parents wanted Mulan to get married, Mulan's parents just wanted Mulan at home, happy and safe Overall, the Disney film, Mulan, demonstrates gender roles, the socialization of gender roles, and the consequences of breaking gender roles. With Mulan going to war for her father in China, many things were at risk: life, honor, and China itself. Showing the characteristics of a man was the only way for Mulan to survive, granted, she wasn't good at showing the characteristics of a woman in the first place. Being captured in war, as a woman, meant death, but Mulan was lucky for her courage in saving Captain Li Shang, as he spared her life, which ultimately allowed Mulan to help save China and the emperor . Even though gender roles were very strict in China, Mulan broke them to save her father's life and became the person she was meant to be..
