Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person. It happens at all ages, all genders, it's physical, it's mental and generally women are victims of their male partners. Domestic violence happens in every corner of the world, so the world must unite and fight domestic violence. Although domestic violence dates back to 753 BC, only recently have coalitions of domestic violence prevention agencies provided help and guidance to battered women. If you have been abused in any way, then you should definitely get in touch with the organizations mentioned in this essay to free yourself. Throughout history, domestic violence has been prominent; Wife beating became a problem in 736 BC, when men beat their wives as a form of punishment. “Early settlers in America based their laws on an Old English common law that explicitly permitted wife-beating for correctional purposes. States have tried to break that law by saying that a husband is permitted to whip his wife only with a stick no larger than his thumb.” (icadvinc.com). In 1866, the first organizations created to help abused women were the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Alabama was the first state to revoke the right to beat one's wife in 1871, but Maryland was the first state to enact a law punishing any husband who beat his wife in 1882. Additionally, in 1867 the state of Maine it was one of the first states to open a shelter for battered women. In the 1950s women were able to rise up because of all the changes that were happening with the civil rights movement and the anti-war campaigns... mid-paper... strategically because women would have a safe place to take refuge if they suffer abuse. Overall, domestic violence has been occurring since 735 BC, but this has changed due to acts like the Violence Against Women Act and organizations like Safe Horizon and NNEDV. However, in the battle to end domestic violence, people must stand up and volunteer at shelters and donate anything that might help, but above all they must report what they see or hear for help to arrive. The fight against domestic violence is a fight that should involve everyone in the world. Works Cited Opera Sited NNEDV.org. National Network to End Domestic Violence.2014. Network.
