Illegal immigration has been a constant topic of debate in politics. For years now, politicians have been trying to create immigration reform that encompasses all the problems related to illegal immigration. According to an article in the Economist (2010), there are four main immigration problems that the country is trying to solve; these are: protecting the nation's borders in order to prevent greater illegal immigration, expanding the number of highly skilled aliens that America admits and retaining, finding a way to ensure an adequate supply of "unskilled workers, perhaps through a guest worker" program; and find a solution to deal with the 11 million illegal immigrants currently living in the United States. To date, no one has managed to find the best solution to the growing problem. However, in the last decade, people like the Senator Richard Durbin and Representative Howard Berman introduced a bill to Congress called the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, which aims to “provide legal status and educational opportunities to those who entered the United States as minors ” (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2010). Although this act does not completely solve the broken immigration system, it is a step towards reaching a solution to the fourth issue mentioned above. This document will go on to provide a detailed description of the DREAM Act, as well as its history through Congress. . The explanation of the conflicting opinions on this issue will follow. Finally, the document will refer to the different laws and regulations that impact this issue, as well as court cases that have addressed the issue of immigrant education.
