Topic > The use of irony in the miner's 'Nacirema' - 1254

The shrines that Nacirema uses for her secret ceremonies are baths. A group of vestals who work in the temple to care for the sick were actually nurses or healthcare workers in the hospital, and a bundle of pig hair is a toothbrush. Miner describes the daily routine as brushing one's teeth in a mysterious way, as using a bundle of pig hair in one's mouth as a daily private mouth ceremony. In Miner's article, breast augmentation was a unique ritual to enlarge women's breasts. The miner manipulates language by describing normal human behaviors into something strange, many things Nacirema acts has created allusions as Nacirema is from an exotic tribe from ancient times. The reader can catch Minor's sense of humor when he portrayed American as Nacirema and when he called a dentist Holy-mouth-men. I saw the humor in Miner's story. Miner's use of ironic humor in the normal daily routine made the reader feel that those activities were something bad we did to our body. His manipulation of language made the regular activities of humans seem uncivilized. His ironic humor made me realize that sometimes what we do on a daily basis and which we consider a natural thing to do, could be quite strange for people of a different culture than ours.
