Sound has two branches of study: phonetics which studies the sounds of human speech from different angles and phonology, the principles that govern the phonetic system of particular languages. The structure category also has two branches: morphology, the study of word formation, and syntax, the study of sentence structure. Finally, in the category of meaning there are two branches: semantics – the study of words and pragmatics – the study of language use and effects in the specific context in which they are spoken (Handke, 2012). Linguistics is a fascinating field of study and gives us a deeper understanding of the history of language, the current state of our language, the evolution of language, and how we shape and express our ideas.
