Topic > Assessing and planning skills - 1244

Reacting to reading I liked chapter 12 which covered assessing and planning skills. When I was reading Gantt charts I found them interesting, but at the time I was much more interested in Pareto charts and impact analysis. Perhaps my background in sales and marketing led to my attraction to these two types of charts over the Gantt chart. The Pareto chart immediately gave me solid numerical data and listed a breakdown of contributing factors. The example showed the school dropout rate rising. It provided a simple overview of the dropout rates of this school. The breakdown of contributing factors also provided the campus and school community with clear goals for improvement, such as increased education and interventions regarding drug and alcohol abuse and teen pregnancy. This chart quickly gave me information and a suggested target plan. In sales and marketing this type of chart would dictate goals for my advertising budget. I was also attracted to the impact analysis graph. I think again this goes back to my business background. In my last management role I managed 32 people. We were the marketing, recruiting and sales team. It was a great team. However, whenever we were faced with a major change, we could potentially lose a week or two of money due to the difficulties some people faced with a serious change. I would have liked to have a tool like this to decide the best way to approach changes and the best way to support them. It would have been a great tool to share with them to show how much care, concern and consideration was taken before the upcoming changes. Clearly this also affects the school environment, which is not as fast-paced and flexible when appropriate... mid-paper... collaborative teams with great attention to compatibility and working styles. Supervisors are expected to complete it at the end of the year so that teachers know what their duties are for next year. In return, teachers are expected to prepare collaboratively before the start of the school year. Collaborative teams are expected to attend collaborative training together as a team during the school year and hopefully choose to attend some training during the summer term as well. If there are multiple collaborative teams within a core academic subject at a particular grade level, the entire group is expected to participate in collaborative training together. We decided to make the entire process collaborative to produce the best collaborative processes. I am very satisfied with the tool we have created. I look forward to what we explore next.
