Since I was a kid, I have always been very shy in the many situations that arose. Whether it was talking to a new child, speaking in front of the class, saying hello to someone my parents knew but I didn't, ordering food, or asking for help in a store – I tried to hide within myself. I simply felt uncomfortable in any circumstance, big or small, involving someone I didn't know and/or multiple people at once. This made my life quite difficult, especially since my parents knew I had to get over this. Therefore, they pushed me to do things like get myself into multiple programs that involved large numbers of people or ask someone a question I had instead of having them ask me, in the hope that I could overcome my shyness. While all of this was for my benefit and I agree that these actions were necessary, they would have simply caused me even more stress and anxiety, as there was a lot of pressure on me to do what I feared. During my sophomore year of high school I was finally understanding the concept that it doesn't really matter what other people think of me. With this newfound attitude, I was able to walk the halls with ease, talk to new people, and not worry about this issue as much. During my school years I always had good friends: few, but fantastic. Then, during my senior year, I started making new friends through the ones I already had. Finally, during my senior year, I was able to branch out and make friends on my own. I have never done anything for myself, nor taken initiative for anything. I no longer depend on others in almost any difficult situation. I realized that a situation is only embarrassing if I'm embarrassing, and with this I could now order my food, ask a stranger a question, and take the initiative to acquire information with ease.
