Final Paper: Exploring Poetic Devices in Song Lyrics Rough Draft Permanent Memories of My Soul Poetry is taught in classrooms and has become a very important aspect of literature over the course of the years. In contrast, the songs have not, if anything, developed a negative connotation by stating that less (words and meaning) is more (popular in society). Some people argue that song lyrics essentially have less value than poetry. Poetry is considered literature because it is written in verse, prose, and forms that reflect mastery of literary techniques and mechanisms. The prejudices between the two works, poetry and song lyrics, create disfavor and prejudice for both. By calling one work over another the title of a valuable literary piece, the audience loses the meaning and appreciation behind the work. The difference between poetry and song lyrics seems very childish. At first glance, poetry is based solely on words, their sounds, tones, meanings and silence all depend on the individual himself who reads the poem. The words within the poem take place in a silent context. While the lyrics rely on the same forces; however, it is supported by music. Musical artists use a lot of deliberate musical information to exaggerate certain words and meanings. The main difference is the environmental conditions that influence the structure of words. To gain full understanding and appreciation of both works, poems and song lyrics, one must read them with the same respect to see the correlation between the two. The song “Tattoos on This Town” by Jason Aldean is a symbolic narrative where there is a secondary meaning behind a story and the character… in the center of the paper… both in Jason Aldean’s song “Tattoos on This Town” ” than in Jim Foulk's poem “Memories in the Mind. " Both works are allegories written from the first-person point of view in the hope of teaching a lesson through images and flashbacks created from previous experiences. The audience of both is able to relate to the experiences discussed and the connotations, meanings deep behind the surface of words, even if they are written in different forms and structures. Song lyrics can be forms of poetry. The use of literary techniques and mechanisms helps develop valuable lessons. Musical support provided in songs adds further elements to help create the artist's desirable conclusion. “Tattoos on This Town” by Jason Aldean helps illustrate this. This work applies literary techniques throughout the lines in order to create a meaningful and great poem.
