Gatto uses the example of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln who do not attend twelve years of school and do well. In fact, he goes on to point out that the most famous Americans in history, such as Edison, Carnegie, and Rockefeller, to name a few, became admirals (p. 302), without attending high school. The main point that Gatto seems to make is that many historians have given up twelve years of school and come out well educated. Although Gatto emphasizes the historical position, Alfie Kohn uses past research to make his point. As Kohn explains, study after study has shown that students starting in elementary school through graduate school are less interested in learning the subject after they get the grade. (p. 287) Additionally, trying to get into college or graduate school is dependent on grades and GPA, which places more emphasis on obtaining the highest grades and GPA, causing students stress in take an A rather than a B or C, fearing that they may be rejected by a
