Brian Dodd wrote the book Empowering the Ministry of Church Leadership in the Spirit According to Paul, “What leaders need most is not new techniques but awareness of the leadership of the Spirit, the importance of prayer, and the essentially team nature of effective ministry,” indicating that leaders must work together. Often leaders may have the potential to operate without divine guidance, which poses a danger to leadership. Furthermore, anyone who wants to find God's path and direction knows the need for a point of reference. Without God's positioning, a leader might as well be without fixed points of reference and without goals. As a matter of fact, without the certainty of God's provision, a leader cannot walk a safe path of leadership. Leaders need eternal reference points of God's word and God's will according to Dodd, this need has never been greater for church leadership. The question then should be: what is the leadership of the Church? Church leaders are the builders of faith among God's people. It is easy to see that the church is certainly made for people; people are not made for the church. Leadership can therefore be effective in many ways if performed with the right intentions and motivations. Kouzes and Posner say there are five ways leaders can practice exemplary leadership. These ways include: (1) modeling the way, (2) inspiring a shared vision (3) challenging the process (4) empowering others to act, and (5) encouraging the heart. The five exemplary leadership practices are the core leadership skills that emerged from our analysis of thousands of Personal-Best Leadership Experience cases. When leaders do their best, they model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, empower others to take action, and encourage the heart. In shaping the way, in leadership, actions are far more important than theirs
