SportsIndia participated in the Winter Olympics for the first time in 1964, in Innsbruck, Austria. The only athlete to represent India at the Olympics was Jeremy Bujakowski. Jeremy Bujakowski participated in the men's Alpine Skinning downhill, but was unable to finish the competition due to injury. However, he participated again in the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble, France. He participated in 3 alpine skiing events: men's downhill, men's slalom, men's giant slalom and placed 2nd in heat 2 of the men's slalom. Wars The Sino-Indian War began in the year 1962. The Sino-Indian War was a war between India and China which lasted for 1 month. The war started due to Himalayan border disputes and because India had granted asylum to the Dalai Lama. The war itself took place on the border, particularly around Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan. The war ended on November 20, 1962. Another war took place in April 1965, called the Indo-Pakistani war. The war was fought by India and Pakistan over the disputed land of Kashmir. Most of the war took place on the border and in Kashmir. The war lasted 5 months and ended due to a ceasefire imposed by the United Nations. Politics Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India. On May 27, 1964, he died while in office due to a heart attack. Lal Bahadur Shastri became the next Prime Minister of India, however he died two years later in 1966. Indira Gandhi (daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru) then became the Prime Minister of India. Also in 1966, Indira Gandhi visited Washington DC and Moscow to strengthen relations. On May 6, 1967, Zakir Hussain became India's first Muslim president. In 1969, an important political event took place. The Indian National Congress is divided into two factions. Indira Gandhi leads one, while Morarji Desai (an Indian independence activist) leads the other. Agriculture: The Green Revolution was a revolution in agriculture that occurred in India. The Green Revolution began in 1968. The purpose of the Green Revolution was to find a way to increase agricultural production, due to the increasing famines that occurred during the 1950s-1970s. Some agricultural techniques adopted in those times were irrigation, use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers and most importantly, use of high yielding variety seeds or HYV seeds. HYV seeds are better quality seeds than regular seeds and also produce more yields.
